ISDN
stands for 'Integrated Services Digital Network'. It allows direct
access to dial-up digital lines & helped to revolutionise modern
telecommunications when it first came into existence in 1984. What
ISDN did was to integrate voice & data into one connection, precluding
the need for separate systems such as telephone, fax & internet.
It is believed that ISDN will eventually replace all existing specialised
types of lines & provide a common communications platform. Digital
transmission of data is instantaneous & accurate as it is not
subject to the distortion that can occur with analogue systems.
It allows high quality audio transmission,
efficient data transfer & faster internet access than traditional
modems. Other activities which ISDN enables include desktop conferencing,
video surveillance video conferencing & videotelephony. Two
levels of service are available with ISDN; BRI (Basic Rate Interface),
designed for the home & small enterprises & PRI (Primary
Rate Interface) which is specific to larger companies.
